All downloads fail, even in Safe Mode. Disabling protections does not fix

Hello all.

For a while, all downloads have failed on Firefox (150.0.1), Windows 11. No file downloaded, and download tab shows a 'failed' underneath the file name. This holds true when downloading any file type, via firefox directly, or an outside app (Discord, for example) that hooks into the browser. Downloads work on other browsers (Chrome).

  • I have checked about:config and reset the recommended options from other articles ("...lastDir" was the only one of the list that had an entry).
  • Starting in Troubleshooting / Safe Mode does not fix.
  • I currently run Norton - disabling it did not seem to fix.
  • I don't have a Family group, so it's probably not the parental controls issue (though I think that was solved?)

I recognize that the lack of ability to download in Safe Mode points towards the possibility of an outside program blocking downloads, but I'm at a bit of a loss, since other browsers do work.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

I suppose you've already tried the suggestions here, What to do if you can't download or save files ... but what about the Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems article?

@Alice

Yes to the first - many of my bullet points are in response to items in that first article. The others (clearing Downloads window, etc) I have already tried.

I haven't done everything from the second article yet - was trying to avoid a reinstall. Perhaps I'll push through that tonight or over the next few days.

Hi Paul,

Another thing you may want to check is whether the issue reproduces in a new Firefox profile. That will rule out most Firfeox settings/customizations almost certainly.
