I'm trying to setup this Thunderbird app on my android phone and in the setup process it wants me to scan i guess a QR code from my laptop with Thunderbird on it. I don't have Thunderbird on my laptop so I can't continue to set the app up on my phone. I need a work,-around for this. I do however have a Mozilla Firefox account and I logged into that but it didn't seem to make any difference

The QR code business is only for conveniently migrating your email account settings from your desktop to your phone. Since you don't have a desktop installation, use the "Add an email account now" option (see attached image.) You may need to know the correct server settings for your email provider, which can be found at their help web site, to proceed.
