bookmarks disappeared, no troubleshooting tips have worked to restore them.

Noticed the bookmarks error message at the top of the browser page then looked to find they were gone, no troubleshooting methods have worked and I don't seem to have any backup files. Bookmark manager is blank and there are no selectable options?
