Tried to download Firefox onto my android mobile, but it kept saying I have to get the app from google.
Due to my ‘thing’ about internet security, I will not use google at any price!
Can you direct me to where I might get the app elsewhere, please?

You can download it from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/fenix/releases/147.0/android/
But it is difficult to update it without Google Play Store.

In case it helps, the Install Firefox on your phone or tablet article has other download locations for Android.
