Thunderbird deleting email addresses

I've noticed recently that addresses that were in my personal address book have disappeared, basically they've been deleted. This next bit is from memory so excuse the vagueness. The last time I looked for these I found them in a bin marked as "deleted by thunderbird".

What is going on?

I need these addresses back.

Contacts are getting deleted by Thunderbird without any user intervention or consent!
