Last few days any Firefox 102.0.1.8221 launch causes my Windows 7 64bit to reboot, usually when I try to mouse click anything in Firefox after it's fired up and restored open tabs, however even if I don't mouse click anything Firefox will force a reboot within a minute or so.

This Firefox Win 7 reboot behaviour only started after the last Firefox update, though I would point out that around update version 100.nn I started getting failed update notifications from within Firefox which necessitated a manual newer version Firefox download and install.

Running Windows 7 in safe mode with networking on allows Firefox to function without crashing, albeit slowly and with no MSE protection available etc.

Only one crash report dated 16/07/2022 with following content: Crash ID: bp-d8383165-9c77-45e4-9929-a3ce12160527

Please note I'm sending this report via Firefox on my iMac coz that still works...

Thanks for the reply.

Only recent software update on that computer is Firefox so that makes it a primary suspect.

Btw, is it possible to install an older version of Firefox, say 101.nn, and see if the computer can be set back to the pre problem state?

A quick followup.

Went to https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/ and found out that latest version Firefox is 103.nn, to which my previous installation of 102.nn was not notifying that Firefox updates are available.

Uninstalled Firefox 102.nn completely, rebooted Windows 7 and then installed Firefox 103.nn without any issues.

Will report back later...

Firefox 103.0 hasn't been released yet. There in a release candidate available as the last stage of a Beta version. Firefox 103 is scheduled for release next Tuesday.

I've been on the Firefox beta channel on both my Macs and Windows machines for more years than I can remember...

Latest version of Firefox is Fx 102.0.1 as you can see say on https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/

The Fx 103 has b on end to show it is on the Beta channel. A version on Release channel will never update to a version on Beta channel as to why you were not notified of Firefox updates. A version on Beta channel can get say 9-14+ builds in testing. When the Fx 103.0 is Released then you will get a update from Fx 102.x .x.

No Firefox version has been a known in causing Windows to reboot or BSOD or such. It could be right situation of drivers (for video cards for example has been common) , hardware (unstable PSU or its connections, RAM etc), run level applications (antivirus and such) etc that under certain circumstances just triggers some sort of system instability.

When the Beta update channel reaches it final beta version for a release then it switches to release candidate stage (RC1) and this means it acts like the actual release and drops the 'b##' that is normally appended like currently is the case with 103.0 Beta. Only "Help -> About Firefox" shows that you are still on the Beta update channel as set in the channel-prefs.js file in the "defaults\pref" folder.

Once released officially you will find the 103 notes on this page.

Thanks for all the replies.

I can only report as I find, which in this instance is my Windows 7 computer runs fine with various cad, email and other software but the moment Firefox is fired up there is the issue I describe above...

In case it helps: I use Windows 7 (64-bit) with Firefox 102.0.1 without any problems. I also have Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as my antivirus.

You could try Firefox 101 but downgrading has it's own problems (see Install an older version of Firefox). I would try basic Firefox troubleshooting first. See Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode, which disables hardware acceleration and Firefox addons (extensions and added themes).

By the way, I did have an issue with Firefox version 90, where the Maximize, Minimize and Close buttons disappeared when using the Firefox Alpenglow theme or any added theme. The problem disappeared when I switched to the System, Light, or Dark themes that come with Firefox. I was able to work around the problem and keep using added Firefox themes, by switching from the Windows 7 Aero theme to a Basic Windows theme in Control Panel -> Personalization, as I reported in this Firefox support thread. I also reported that All windows open faster now with the Basic Windows 7 theme compared to Aero, even when opening other applications like SeaMonkey, which used to take a long time to load.

Thank you for that input Alice, always good to hear other people's experiences with problem solving.

I have to admit I've had a pretty good trouble free run with Firefox over the years so I would take this opportunity to offer my thanks etc. to the Mozilla team...

Looks like the Windows 7 installation needs to replaced with a new one so this topic may be closed.
