As Firefox is my pdf browser, when I click on a pdf it keeps opening the file, in an infinite loop, opening tab after tab after tab....

I think my one sentence does it. I am using Firefox as my pdf browser. I click on a file in Explorer, then it keeps opening the file continually in Firefox. If I catch it in time, I can close firefox. If not, I cannot even use the Task Manager. I have to hold the off button until my machine turns off. Thank you for any thoughts on this. I believe it is a bug. WR/~ David

Hi David,

This usually happens because you chose Firefox as the program to always use for a particular action, such as opening a certain type of file.

See this article for more information: Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link

Make sure that you haven't disabled the builtin Firefox PDF Viewer and that the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) is set to "Preview in Firefox".

Thank you for responses, cor-el and RobertJ! I was able to get firefox to always prompt me. Unfortunately the loop continues to open tabs when I select "open" with Firefox. When I select "Cancel", none of the tabs have opened my PDF.

Also, I have deleted the "handlers.json" file, restarted Firefox and even restarted my computer. This reset did not change how firefox continually loops in this situation.

I have a one week old (i.e. new) machine running in Windows 10 Pro - version 1909.

Again, thank you.

This seems to have done the trick, cor-el. Thank you.

Of course Firefox updated to v 74.0 right when I was checking this, so I may never know if Mozilla repaired this, or if I did. But in either case, I appear to be great now!
