Since I reinstalled my Windows 10 laptop, Firefox 58 or higher won't launch. Firefox 57 or lower starts fine. But when I install FF 58+ and start the program, nothing happens. The cursor changes briefly and after a couple of seconds there's no more activity. The firefox.exe process shows no more activity.

What I tried: - Installed FF 58 or higher and started the program. No luck. - Started in safe mode, or profile manager. No luck, nothing happens. - I deleted all firefox files/registry keys (also from %appdata% and %localappdata%, as well as all reg keys below HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla. No luck. - With ccleaner I cleaned up all temp folders. No luck. - I temporary disabled a/v software (Windows defender and Palo Alto Traps). No luck. - I was running Windows 10 1607. I upgraded to 1709, but still no luck. - I analysed the process firefox.exe with process monitor from sysinternals. I don't see anything weird and after a couple of seconds, the process finishes with exiting a thread, and that's it. No more activity from this process, until I kill it manually. The process monitor log doesn't show any activities in accessing the user profile settings. - When I install FF 57 everything works fine. Then when I choose to upgrade, the upgrade finishes but FF won't start anymore. - I can't find any log files explaining what's going on. - Before I reinstalled my laptop, I used the same image (sccm) 1 year ago, and firefox was working fine then. - Finally I also looked at other toolings which could interfere, such as VLC media player. I removed those tools as well. No luck.

I'm at a loss here. Can somebody point me to the right direction? Perhaps version 58+ introduced something completely new which somehow causes issues with my installation? Any log files I'm missing, which might explain what's going on?

Thanks.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

Thanks for your reply. We don't use a software firewall or security program, except for Traps. I disabled Traps and still no luck. The process just doesn't do much. And I don't see any events in the eventlog.

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select Network.

[56+] Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Look for Network. +++++++++++++++++++++ Look for Configure How Firefox Connects and press the Settings button. If you are using a proxy, make sure those settings are correct. If there is no proxy, first try No Proxy. If there is a problem, then try System Proxy.

I wish it was that easy. Firefox doesn't start at all. No screen, no address bar to use, nothing. Safe mode not possible, profile manager is also not possible.

I would suggest ignoring the above. Work with the beast you know.

You are only at Windows version 1709 1803 came out in April and 3wks give or take the next Feature Release will be out.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Click the Update Now Button.

But let's fix your registry/system files 1st : 1)Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin). 2) Copy/Paste or Type the following command and press Enter: 3) DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth Reboot after.

See if Firefox will run after updating :

The other option you can try is to boot Windows into Safe Mode with Networking and after uninstalling Firefox (again) then use the Full Version Installer to install 61.0.2 :

or install the Extended Release Version 60.1.0esr Firefox ESR does not come with the latest features but it has the latest security and stability fixes.

Full Version Installers fix a lot of issues.
