Shockwave Flash will not load on my Windows XP
anything that requires Shockwave Flash brings up the message that flash would not load and that I should upgrade my browser. In the Plug-ins manager I have enabled "always activate"; what must I do?

You should do what is says, upgrade. Windows XP is no longer supported, neither by Microsoft, nor Mozilla, nor Adobe.
the problem is that it doesn't occur on every programme; very frustrating. Mozilla is actually supporting Shackwave Flash into 2018
You have not allowed Mozilla to send info ticked from within Firefox. So no information. But if correct your Upgrade is this : Move to the Extended Release Version 52.5.2 ESR. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018.
You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

The Flash Player from Adobe still requires WinXP SP3 or later Windows.

Actually Mozilla still supports WinXP/Vista as they are served Firefox 52 ESR with 52.5.0esr is current and 52.8.0esr will out in May 2018 will likely be the last update for 52 ESR and to support WinXP/Vista. It is Firefox 53.0 and later that has dropped WinXP/Vista support.

Actually as late as 2020 but with increasing restrictions from 2018 as time goes on. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Plugins/Roadmap
As for whether Adobe continues to support the EOL WinXP with the Adobe Flash Player is another story.

Could you check this page:

I have a script that tries to determine whether you have Flash installed, then there is a button to insert a player into the page which usually either collapses that area or shows a player, if Flash runs despite the script not being able to find it.
Of course, JavaScript can't be blocked or the page won't work.
