It is always the first suggestion...

I looked in about.config at all browser.urlbar.suggest.* settings and could not find anything...

If it is not a URL, I only want to search my bookmarks, so I disabled browser.urlbar.suggest.history

in about:config search for browser.urlbar.suggest.searches and set to false

In order to change your Firefox Configuration please do the following:

  1. In the address bar, type about:config and press the Enter key.
  2. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
Click I accept the risk! to continue to the about:config page.

notice on the very first time you type in the address field you are asked if you would like suggestions

The default for 'browser.urlbar.suggest.searches' is 'false' and it doesn't resolve the issue... Try typing <a><enter> in the urlbar and it will still take you to your default search engine (it takes me to https://www.google.com/search?q=a&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)
