email options will not stay as set

My setting for tools-options-general: when messages arrive, play a sound will not stay set. I check "play a sound" and link to a file on my coputer, but the check mark does not persist. The box spontaneously unchecks itself after a few minutes. How can I get this choice to stay checked?

I suggest you try safe mode and see if you are getting a bad interaction form an add-on.

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
