using windows 10 with thunderbird as the default email client. Opened computer this morning and there were no new messages (usually 20-25 overnight). Clicked on Get Mail and message at the bottom of the page was: Checking mail server capabilities. Rebooted computer, same message. Restarted Thunderbird with no add-ins active. Same error message.  ???

Talk to your email provider, they may have a problem.

I can access my email through webmail on my ISP's server without any problem. Can't see why Thunderbird has a problem connecting as well.

Webmail infrastructure is independent from POP/IMAP/SMTP servers. Therefore, if webmail works, this is no indication that there are no other problems.
