Inbox window is blank when double-clicking on an email with content

My inbox in Thunderbird is having problems showing email. If I have the message pane open below the list of emails, after using the arrow key to view several messages, the message pane will stop showing the next message's content, and will simply stay on one email's content.

If I hide the message pane and try double-clicking on the emails in the list, when the pop-up window opens to show the content it is blank. This is for any email I open.

Everything works okay for several emails and then it starts acting up - the message pane kind of "freezing" on display of one email, or the pop-up window being empty. I can go to another folder and then back to the Inbox, start looking through different emails in the list, and it works fine for a bit. After viewing about 20-30 emails it starts having problems again. So it doesn't seem to get stuck on, or have a problem with, any one email.

It is only happening with the Inbox folder. The same expected behavior in the other folders (message pane or pop-up window showing proper email content) works fine.

I am on a Macbook Pro laptop. There are maybe 600 messages in the Inbox, but far more saved in some folders. I have emptied the trash and compacted the Inbox. I do have the setting to "allow remote content" switched to on.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? Thanks so much.
