For the best Exchange experience, we recommend Thunderbird 145 or newer. Thunderbird implements Exchange via EWS (Exchange Web Services), currently limited to email.

Calendar and address book using EWS will follow at a later date. Also in the future, is Exchange via Microsoft Graph, so please do not file bug reports for these items at this time.

Exchange is new, so we very much welcome your feedback and bug reports. For more technical detail, as well as things to test and look for, see the Thunderbird:Exchange wiki page.

Setup

When creating a new account using classic account creation, choose the Exchange Web Services option. Or if using the new Account Hub, when providing an exchange email address, Exchange should be automatically detected. If Exchange is not detected, choose the first Exchange option.

Configure your Exchange account

Again, for the best experience, we recommend Thunderbird 145 or newer.

Thunderbird profiles with 1 or more accounts

If you have a Thunderbird profile with one or more accounts, you will see the new Thunderbird Account Hub.

  1. Click Thunderbird app menu > New Account > Email. The Account Hub dialog will appear.
  2. Enter your name, email address, and if required, your two factor authentication code for your Exchange email account.
  3. Click the Continue button. The password entry dialog will appear.

Note: In the first dialog box, you do not enter your account password. You will enter your password in a separate, branded panel provided by Microsoft (not Mozilla) as part of their OAuth implementation.
Screenshot of that panel provided by Microsoft:

  4. Enter your password and click Sign in. The account type selection dialog will appear.

  5. Select the radio_button Exchange radio button and click Continue to use Thunderbird's built-in Exchange code.
  6. Follow the prompts to finish adding your Exchange account.
Note: The Exchange button only appears if the email you entered is an Exchange account.

Manual EWS Configuration

There are a diversity of EWS servers which could cause auto configuration of your EWS email account to fail. Here's a potential workaround for that situation:

  1. In 145 and newer once you enter a valid email address, you can now manually configure your email settings by clicking MANUAL CONFIGURATION. Please consult your Exchange administrator for the exact manual settings.
  2. Under Protocol, select EWS.
  3. Follow the prompts and fill in the settings from your Exchange administrator.

Thunderbird profile with no accounts

If you have a Thunderbird profile with no accounts, you will see the older Add account wizard.

  1. Click Thunderbird app menu > New Account > Email. The Account Setup dialog will appear.

The account settings dialog will appear.

  5. Select the radio_button Exchange Web Services radio button and click Continue to use Thunderbird's built-in Exchange code.
  6. Follow the prompts to finish adding your Exchange account.
Note: The Exchange Web Services button only appears if the email you entered is an Exchange account.

Send and receive emails with your Exchange Account

Once you have configured your Exchange Account in Thunderbird, you can use it to send and receive emails just like an IMAP or POP account.

Feedback and Bug Reports

To report a problem when using version 145 or newer, please file a bug report.

To see open bug reports and more technical detail about bug reporting, tracking bug activity, plus things to test and look for, see the Thunderbird:Exchange wiki page.

You may use Topicbox to discuss or ask questions about Exchange, either the beta group or the enterprise group.

Microsoft hosted vs. self hosted exchange servers

Administrators and others interested in the details of EWS instances (Microsoft hosted, Microsoft hosted as tenant-specific, and self hosted) will want to refer to the Thunderbird:Exchange wiki page.
