Chosen solution

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Type about:config in Addressbar and search for browser.newtab.url and modify the value to your specific website

This did not work for me. AVG found a way around it. AVG Search is popping up if I open a new tab and I cannot get it to go away.

I did change browser.newtab.url to the URL I want but still AVG pops up when I open new tab

It is very annoying, I hate it if software companies think they can just do to your computer what they want.
