Today when I tried to open Thunderbird, it asked me to set up my account. I've been using Thunderbird for years, so why is it asking me now? How do I fix this and get my emails back?

There was likely an update. Sometimes anti-virus software interferes and TB isn't sure where your email is. On that screen that asks for new account, ignore it and click the 'home' tab. Assuming you're using Windows, right-click and activate 'menu bar'. Then, click help>moretroubleshootinginformation, scroll down to Profiles, click 'about:profiles' and yours should appear. Just select it and you're done. Let us know if you have problems.

I got as far as clicking about:profiles but don't know where to go from there. It shows something called "Profile: default" followed by a root directory and a local directory. The only choices to click on are "open folder" after each directory which literally does that, and "create a new profile", "rename", "restart with add-ons disabled...", and "restart normally..." . So what do I do?

Could you post a screenshot of what you see in the about:profiles panel? I had made an assumption that your profile was still there, as that is normally the situation.

Here's the screen shot of my about:profiles :

I will assume one of them is your old profile. You can check this by clicking 'open folder' and then browse the Mail folder (if your account was POP) or the ImapMail folder (if your account was IMAP). If you see your account name, that tells you that is the correct profile. If there is no option on the about:profiles page to select it, you can click the 'create profile' button, click 'next' and then 1) enter a name, such as MYPROFILE, and then 2) click the browse button to select the profile you had earlier identified. I think that will do it.

Still doesn't fix it.

When you clicked the 'open folders' link, did you see your accounts? If not, then I am at a loss on where your email is.
