Firefox upgraded itself today and the process removed all my bookmarks and passwords.

annie smart

Firefox has exceeded all previous mess-ups by upgrading itself today (apparently sometime when my battery went flat and was then left recharging), and this happened despite my account being set for 'upgrades to be only installed manually'. Now every bookmark, all passwords and all the settings of my Home Page have been erased. I have no 'restore point' to resort to as supposedly all this info is synced to the cloud. But I can find no method to retrieve any of these files let alone one to restore them. This is a nightmare. Please help.

Hi Annie, If Firefox starts up after an update without your bookmarks and other settings, check whether your data is available in a different profile:

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it. The About Profiles page will open. This page should list at least one profile and could list many.

The profile that Firefox is currently using will show:
This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Please do not delete anything here; don't use any Remove buttons.

Do you have another profile named default or default-longnumber listed on this page? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

If it isn't what you want, simply close that new window.

If it IS what you want, click the Set as default profile button for that profile on the about:profiles page. Firefox will use it automatically at the next startup.

For more information see Recover user data missing after Firefox update or reinstall.

Note: If your bookmarks are not available in another Firefox profile, see Recover lost or missing Bookmarks for other solutions.

I put this question out there too after following all your suggestions as well as everything on the site to no avail. Folks, try this.... I got frustrated and was going to delete Firefox. When I hit uninstall Firefox, a window came up to Refresh Firefox. I figured what's one more try . I did it and Dang, all was well again. I don't know if this is automatic, the Refresh suggestion I mean. But try to Uninstall and see if it comes up. Hope this helps.

If you're still in the empty profile it would be useful to get some information that might help me narrow down why this happened to you. You would need to enter about:config into the address bar, search for toolkit.telemetry.cachedClientID and then send me the ID. This will allow me to access the telemetry data for that profile. You can email it to me at dtownsend@mozilla.com if you like.
