I have recently upgraded Firefox to 36 due to a runtime error on an earlier version. I am running Win XP with SP3, and also using Norton 360. After the upgrade the address bar does not work either by using the enter key, or the drop down menu of recent sites and selecting one. My bookmarks work as they should and I can go to any site that I have there. My Google home page works as it should and it will take me to any site from my homepage. I have tried using the Mozilla Firefox "safe start" method with no difference. I have also upgraded my Norton 360 with the latest changes and it's up date. I have "allowed" Mozilla Firefox in the Norton firewall configuration, but none of these things have had any effect on the problem. I have read, and tried, everything I could find regarding "address bar problems" but to no avail. I really like Firefox but this is becoming quite annoying and I don't want to go back to IE 8. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode.

You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab. Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Expanding on cor-el's suggestion, your Firefox reported itself as:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 4.10; rv:36.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/36.0

So having compatibility set to Windows 98 on the Firefox shortcut sounds like the first thing to turn off. Then exit Firefox and start it up again in standard Windows XP mode. Better?

If you just changed that recently, could you mention where you saw that suggestion? Several other users have crippled their Firefox doing the same thing.

Thank you for the great suggestion of not running in the "compatibility mode". I deselected it and the address bar is back to working normal again.

I appreciate all the quick responses out there. Thanks again!
