Thunderbird freezes and shows white screen when I hit the 'reply' button. What could be the reason?

Everytime I try and reply to emails, Thunderbird freezes and goes into white screen mode. The whole process takes about 15 seconds before the reply window shows.

Start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled. - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
