Messages have disappeared - bizarre behavior
Thunderbird user for 20+ years. A while ago I sat down to my open instance of TB and noticed that all my IN box history was gone, except for some messages that had come in over the last 30 minutes or so. I then checked my TRASH file and it was BIZARRE. The TRASH messages, one by one, were disappearing, like someone was highlighting each message and then pressing Delete. They were auto-disappearing about one every second.
I immediately shut down my PC, rebooted, and made sure my network was disconnected. Checked TB, but all inbox messages were indeed gone. One mssg just came in and seems to be sticking. Many of those IN box messages I really need. Any clue what happened? Are all my mssg's gone? What to do?

Update: it looks like all my missing IN box mssgs are now in TRASH, which is a relief, but will take forever to find what I need. I tried to "Move To" from TRASH to IN box and it worked.
Why on earth would all my IN box mssgs (perhaps 400-500) get phantom-moved to my TRASH? And why would my TRASH auto-cannibalize its messages? I've never seen anything like it.
