Thunderbird uses Junk Controls. It does not use Spam folders or even the word Spam. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_Tips_:_Compacting_Folders

Your providers spam filter or some other spam filter that you have on your computer might use a spam folder.
