Getting error that Thunderbird is already running when it isn't

Even when the computer is first turned on, starting Thunderbird gives a message that it is already running when it is not. Checking from the Task Manager shows no instances of it running.

How do I fix this? Latest iteration of Thunderbird running under Windows 7, SP1, with 8 Gb RAM.
