What are remote improvements?
Remote improvements are fixes and feature changes that Mozilla can deliver to Firefox between regular Firefox updates. They can help fix problems or improve features without requiring you to wait for the next Firefox update. Remote improvements range from fixes to feature changes to Firefox. They are delivered remotely between versions and updates to make your browsing experience stabler and richer, and they are completely optional based on your preferences. If you opt into remote improvements, you can have Firefox automatically install these changes for you.
Previously, access to these changes required you to share technical and interraction data (telemetry) with Mozilla. However, as of Firefox version 148, you can opt into receiving remote improvements, even if you have opted out of sharing your telemetry or participating in our experimental studies.
Remote improvements are now separate from technical and interaction data collection. This means you can receive remote improvements without choosing to share technical and interaction data with Mozilla. Turning remote improvements on or off does not change your data collection settings.
Turn remove improvements on or off
Please note the following defaults:
- Remote improvements will be toggled ON by default, as long as you did not deliberately opt out of studies in Settings prior to Firefox version 148.
- Remote improvements will be toggled OFF by default, if you deliberately opted out of studies in Settings prior to Firefox version 148.
Depending on your preferences, you will be able to turn remote improvements on and off whenever you wish, by adjusting your settings on Desktop, Android or iOS. Follow the steps below based on your platform:
Firefox
- In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click and select (or , in some cases).Click the menu button
and select .
- Select the panel on the left.
- Go down to the Firefox Data Collection and UseFirefox data collection and use section.
- Select or clear the Allow Firefox to improve features, performance, and stability between updates checkbox to turn remove improvements on or off.
Firefox for Android
- Open Firefox and tap the menu button ⋮ on the browser toolbar.
- Select .
- Scroll to the Advanced section, then tap .
- Toggle the Allow remote improvements switch on or off.
Firefox for iOS
- Open Firefox and tap the menu button ≡ on the browser toolbar.
- Select .
- Scroll to the section.
- Toggle the Allow Remote Improvements switch on or off.
What happens if I disable this option?
If you turn off the remote improvements setting:
- Firefox will stop automatically downloading remote fixes and progressive rollouts of feature changes.
- However, you will still get our regular updates even though this setting is disabled.
Since remote improvements are now separate from data collection, any changes made to this setting will not affect data collection settings, such as crash reports or technical telemetry. You will only change whether or not you receive automatic fixes or feature improvements between Firefox versions.
In other words, the remote improvements setting controls whether Firefox can receive these changes between regular updates. Your data collection settings separately control what information Firefox can share with Mozilla.
