Is the Mute Tabs icon a Fixture?
The mute tabs icon is just a waste of space as soon as you get a few tabs loaded and the tabs shrink. I have multiple tabs showing at the moment where I have clicked on the icon and unmuted them when just trying to select them. It does not help that the icons have been placed in almost the exact centre of the tab, at least with the 19 I have showing in a mix of muted/unmuted. Only 7 of these tabs are still muted, although I did deliberately unmute one to check the action.
I would prefer it if these icons are not showing as they are a waste of space and my time. If you hit the icon the tab is not brought to the front as intended so you have to click on them again. I just want the tabs to work like real tabs.
Is there any way to remove the feature altogether? I have after a lot of frustration just reduced the sound for Firefox in the Windows Volume Mixer as I did before tab muting was thought of. I almost never use sound in Firefox anyway.

Hello
If you wish to test the preference, browser.tabs.tabMinWidth.
1 - Go to Configuration Editor for Firefox https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/about-config-editor-firefox 2 - Enter a search term browser.tabs.tabMinWidth value by defaut 76
By way of illustration https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/the-new-tab-mute-button/m-p/92568/highlight/true#M36009
Great. This would seem to fit the bill but is it reversible without having to change the media.autoplay.default again?
I don't want permanent muting. There are occasions when I need to have audio.
How would I enable audio on a single tab in this case?
I try to use VLC for all media as it is far simpler. Well that is what it is designed for. Firefox may be a good browser but a good media player it definitively is not. I also have the added complication that my external speaker system senses loudness and only activates above certain levels so I have to juggle the volume on both the computer and speakers at times. Firefox volume is not as easy as just rolling a mouse wheel. Therefore quick simple unmuting is essential.
The subject, media.autoplay.default, is unrelated to, browser.tabs.tabMinWidth.
media.autoplay.default, this is another subject.
I'm going to assume Agent virtuel is just an AI response and block it if it cannot prove it is human fairly quickly.
As is typical of any non human support it has totally missed the point and provided useless information.
The second link provided above preceded by "By way of illustration" does mention the term "browser.tabs.tabMinWidth" BUT It is the AI non person who provides it and it is the first search result for the page so had zero relevance to the preceding discussion.
In the case of this current discussion it has nothing to do with my query and therefore pointless and a waste of time.
You can remove the mute icon using the userChrome.css file with the following content:
.tab-audio-button { display: none!important; }
"Media.autoplay.default" is mentioned in the last post of the first link. This post was written by Agent virtuel. I was wrong about which link. It was this that I felt could solve the issue. Tab size is still nothing to do with what I want.
The userChrome.css file is not something I have dealt with before.
I did see mention of using it in the link I have discussed (First, not second link).
I will look further but I was hoping there was an easy way to fix what appears to be a pretty bad idea.
It seems Firefox is moving away from ordinary people who just want a browser they can use for browsing and not have new features they don't need constantly forced on them. This disappointing to me as I have been using Firefox exclusively for a very very long time. Probably longer than most of the users here have been alive.
To be, or not to be, that is the question. I am not an AI. insisting on my humanity is not convincing when AI would be attempting to make that same claim. I am not an AI.
The question https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/the-new-tab-mute-button/m-p/107872/highlight/true#M41567 "There are still websites where media autoplay blocking doesn't work" https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/block-autoplay, is unrelated to, browser.tabs.tabMinWidth.
I am aware of the context of your last paragraph as I have already stated I made a mistake about which link. This is what I wrote.
"Media.autoplay.default" is mentioned in the last post of the first link. This post was written by Agent virtuel. I was wrong about which link. It was this that I felt could solve the issue. Tab size is still nothing to do with what I want.
I guess the fact you haven't taken this in is some indication you are human, but Agent virtuel and Agentvirtuel have both featured writing about "browser.tabs.tabMinWidth" and not as far as I have seen in a relevant manner. Very typical AI behavior. I do admit my sample size is tiny however.
Will AI admit failure? It can and has been trained to lie just to provide an answer.
Tab size has nothing to do with my question. Move on.
Please, stop focusing, on, autoplay. I answered to m-fessler.

This particular new feature has been introduced in Firefox 42. It is 10 years already.
Due to the option, Expand sidebard on hover. https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/option-to-disable-the-audio-icon-on-tabs/idc-p/105065/highlight/true#M55318
A test, userChrome.css
.tab-audio-button{display:none!important;} .tab-icon-overlay{display:none!important;}
"This particular new feature has been introduced in Firefox 42. It is 10 years already."
No. The unmute icon placed close to the cursor aim point for a tab is not 10 years old.
Ok.
I will investigate the userChrome.css idea if I can find the time and if I can work it out.
Other than that I am going to consider this issue as unsolved.
I can only assume nobody actually understands what the problem really is. I suspect this is because of the different approaches contributors have to this sort of thing. They see it as a challenge. The rest of us are seeking help because they just want to get on with their work and life.

Is it this subject. https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/dynamic-tab-size-on-tabs-with-audio-give-a-setting-or-about/idc-p/90991/highlight/true#M48391 by way of illustration, Firefox 136 - Firefox 128.
