I've used Firefox for years, and for years I daily do my online banking.

Now all of a sudden, without any warning I cannot log into my bank account. I've tried clearing history, etc. I've tried the about:config change...

I can log in fine with Microsoft Edge.

My wife uses Firefox and she can log into the bank. I suspect that is because Firefox has not updated on her computer.

This is maddening, to put it mildly.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}
by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

While you are in safe mode;

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

Thank you for your suggestions, but nothing worked. I had already tried clearing cookies, cache, etc - so I did it all again. Then I opened Firefox is Safe mode and disabled the hardware acceleration. Nothing worked!

I am extremely upset. I have been using Firefox for years. Previous to yesterday I never had a problem logging into my banking. Now, all of a sudden I cannot do so! Obviously, online banking is a fundamental and crucial activity!!! How dare Firefox screw up my system so this does not work!!!!!

I can very easily log into this same banking account with Microsoft Edge - no problem at all!

I don't want to uninstall Firefox. I have it set up the way I like, with extensions, etc. But how can I possibly use a web browser that does not allow something so fundamental as online banking?????? And why does this happen so unexpectedly, from one day to the next, completely screwing up a users system? Why doesn't Firefox just leave things alone when they're already working fine? Is there a way to uninstall this current crappy version, re-install an older version, and then set it up so as to prevent Firefox from doing anything in the future to MY SYSTEM?

You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.

Tried the right click "Forget About This Site" - made no difference.

This is so unbelievably maddening! Two days ago and for years previous, I never had a problem accessing online banking. Now all of a sudden, without any warning, Firefox has messed up my system.

I have located my profile in two places: local and roaming.

But with the four links you sent, I'm not at all comfortable as to what I should do. Unfortunately, I'm just an ordinary Firefox user - not a computer / web developer (as I'm sure is the case with 99% of Firefox users).

So, do I delete my user profile in these two places?

Or, do I keep these two user profiles and create a new one?

And in either case, what do I do next?

And finally, why should a Firefox user have to go through all of this?

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so do not get confused by seeing two folders.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

I created a new profile and named it JDSTest. I shut down Firefox and re-started, and it opened with the new profile and introductory pages from Mozilla. I then went to the bank site and logged in and everything worked!

So, the good news is that with the new profile I can access online banking as before.

However, how do I fix my original profile? It has all my settings, extensions, etc. For example, in order to send this message I needed to change back to my default profile and re-start Firefox.

I sure hope I can fix my original profile. At least, I feel progress is being made. Thank you very much!

When you are ready, we can start moving parts of your old data and Copy it to the new profile.


First; open your file browser to the New profile;

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder

Linux: Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Directory. To its right press the button Open Directory.


Second, open another file browser to the Old profile. You should see it on the directory "tree" in the first file browser. Right-click on that folder and select Open In New Window.


Warning ! ! Only Copy the files you are told. We will avoid anything that might cause problems.
Here is the list of files;

cookies: cookies.sqlite Do not bother. Cookies will be created when you return to the website. However, you will have to log in everywhere. And you may lose any settings that websites store on your computer.

extensions(add-ons, themes): it would be better to download them fresh. If you need to remember what add-ons you had, open the extensions sub-folder and look at the .xpi files


logins.json and key3.db [v58+]key4.db : These are the password files. Copy Both !

persdict.dat : custom dictionary - words you added to the dictionary

mimeTypes.rdf [v55+]handlers.json : What to do with what type of file.

places.sqlite : History and Bookmarks.

prefs.js : Your settings. Note: If you were having problems, this could be contaminated.

cert8.db [v58+]cert9.db and possibly cert_override.txt : Stores all your security certificate settings and any SSL certificates you have imported into Firefox. If removed, the cert8.db, cert9.db file will be replaced.

search.json.mozlz4 : file stores the user-installed search engines that are available in the Firefox v47+

search.sqlite file and searchplugins folder store the search engines that are available in the Firefox Search bar before Firefox v47


Copy these files from the old to the new. You may get a message that the files already exist. Choose to over-write for each file.

Just an update: I printed off your instructions for editing my new profile by copying specified files from my old default profile. I was planning to make the changes after work.

So, now I am at my computer with the original default profile loaded, and I thought, why not just try and open my online banking one last time. Well, I was amazed to see that it worked! I have no idea why, or what happened??

So, now I am wondering if I should just leave well enough alone? What do you think? You have helped me a great deal and I appreciate that very much. I feel that I have gained some valuable knowledge. Should I just leave everything alone as it is? At least, I am now armed with some great knowledge if in the future there are problems and I suspect that it might have to do with my profile - now I will know what to do. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you very much!

I've kept all of your notes and feel that I am well equipped to troubleshoot should problems like this arise again. Sorry if I vented a bit - it was just that the problem showed up so unexpectedly and I hadn't a clue what was going on.

I noticed when I checked that there was a minor version update with Firefox (78.0.1 to 78.0.2) - so maybe that fixed the problem??

I'm having a similar problem, but my problem is with Verizon and Angie's List. I started having problems with Verizon on September 21, 2020. I've cleared cookies, history, started Firefox in safe mode, and created a new profile, but the problem persists. I can use Microsoft Edge, but I'd rather not.

I'm using Firefox 80.0.1 (64 bit), running Windows 10 Home, version 2004 (OS build 19041.546, with 2020.09 Cumulative update). What else can I do? I love using Firefox, and do not want to switch to another browser.

Having same issue with my bank's website. Have tried all the steps mentioned above. Firefox 83.0 (64 bit) and Windows 10 Pro here. It's to the point where I'm just going to switch to another browser, I think.

Is there any way to contact Firefox about the issue? Or at least put in a request to fix this? Seems to be a common problem on a lot of banking websites (and others).
