sometimes I close Firefox then try to open it again. Message "Firefox still running" However, it is not visible. Must reboot to get it to run again.

Have a look at

kill firefox.exe (and maybe plugincontainer.exe) processes, the easiest method, as explained in the linked article is to use Task manger (Ctrl + Alt + Del {XP}) (Ctrl + Shift + Esc {>=Vista})

You may need to make further investigations if the problem re-occurs or persists
