cannot download/install firefox becasue 7-zip says it cannot create temp archive folder. How do I get around this? Why can I not simply install firefox?

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox. So you can try to disable your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes it work. Do not forget to re-enable your AV software once you are finished.
