Did you check the Home page setting to be sure that there aren't two pages separated by a pipe (|)?

If that isn't the case then delete or rename the files prefs.js and user.js in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Windows may be hiding the .js file extension. The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.

Thanks so much to whoever suggested it--my problem was two instances separated by a pipe.
