I use to be able to type the first letter and the search bar would drop down with all my history. this has disappeared.

Make sure that the Location Bar is not set to "Nothing":
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History, Bookmarks, History and Bookmarks
This can also be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
Thanks cor-el it was not the problem. i found the answer here - Right click the search engine (Google) icon in the search box and uncheck "Show Suggestions. Problem fixed.
