I have an older Gateway laptop with 1 gig of ram, 2.4 Pentium 4 processor, and 40 gig HD. I am running the latest Windows XP update. When I launch Firefox (3.6.1.1), the screen colors drop from 32 bit to 8 bit. I have tried going into compatability and adjusting setting but it does not work. This only happens when launching firefox.

Check that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode or with a reduced screen resolution.
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode.
You can check that in the "Compatibility" tab in the Properties via the right-click context menu of the Firefox desktop shortcut.
Make sure that all items are de-selected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

Check the settings of the desktop shortcut and the Firefox program in the Firefox program folder.
