Firefox 3.6.9 doesn't open but is running in task manager

heskel

I received Animalware via µTorrent and was very busy cleaning up. I changed from AVG (because it let it slip by) to Avira Anti-Vir, ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, among other threat removers. In the beginning, none of the current browsers, as well as Outlook Express, were able to connect, but as I progressed with the cleaning operation, IE, Chrome, Safari & Outlook Express were able to connect. Firefox still doesn't open and displays no errors, but runs in Task Manager using 95% of the CPU. I am also running online scans from Trend Micro, Panda and bitDefender. Meanwhile, if anyone has any other suggestions, I would be very thankful.

A couple of options:

First try creating a new profile, Firefox stores user information in the profile folder, creating a new profile will tell us if the problem is in the profile folder. For details on how to do this see Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows. If the new profile works, you can copy selected information from the old profile. I would limit this to bookmarks and passwords to minimize the risk of copying what was mucked up in the old profile. For details on what to copy see Transferring data to a new profile.

If that does not help, try re-installing Firefox. First uninstall Firefox and then delete the Firefox installation directory before re-installing Firefox. Details on doing this are in the Uninstalling Firefox article.

Thanks Tony,

I tried creating a new profile, but when I clicked on the Start Firefox Now button, it still didn't start, but is running in task manager (same problem).

To re-install Firefox, which I actually did before without uninstalling, I am afraid I will lose all passwords, bookmarks, etc. Is there a method to insure that these vital data are not lost during the uninstall?

Make sure that you do not remove your personal data when you uninstall Firefox. Then you won't lose personal data stored in a different location in the Firefox Profile Folder.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks Firefox.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.

I tried every threat-remover listed above. Each one found threats and removed them I re-installed Firefox but Firefox still does not start. BUT, I started Firefox with the Safe Mode link, and lo and behold, it started up, but without any bookmarks, passwords, etc. I had restored these from a previous MozBackup but it seems that in Safe Mode none of these come up.

Any further suggestions to get the full Firefox running with all my personalizations?
