How do I get my Bookmarks Back after FireFox was updated to 153?

Bill Sine

My FireFox was updated to version 153 and all of my bookmarks are gone. I tried to restore them in Manage Bookmarks. But when i click on 'Import and Backup', then 'Restore', then click on 'choose file' nothing happens. I navigated to the directory "bookmarkbackups" and I can see several backups, one dated 08/06/2026. But how do I get Manage Bookmarks to see that file?

I tried to bookmark a current tab and it does not show up under Bookmarks. why can't I set a new bookmark? Are these issues related?

I'm on Windows 10.

For the Troubleshooting data, I manually open about:support and clicked on 'Copy text to Clipboard'. Then pasted that into the box below.

It sounds like something on the system is holding access to those files — could you please try rebooting the whole machine first, to see if the lock gets released — so you can either see your old data, or use the system to restore and/or add new items there as a first thing to sort out?

Bill, it might be worth checking the integrity of your Places Database files, which are where Firefox stores bookmarks and their icons. To do this:

  1. Go to Help menu (press alt+H).
  2. Select "More Troubleshooting Information".
  3. On the page that opens, scroll down to "Places Database" and press the "Verify Integrity" button.
  4. Once the check has finished, Look for any lines in the report that startt with a "-" or that contain the term "error".

If any errors are reported, try restarting Firefox and re-running the integrity check to see if they were fixed by the first check. You may want to repeat this 'restart and re-check' process again if errors are still found.

If that doesn't work to restore the missing bookmarks, then you could try the steps in this article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recover-user-data-missing-after-firefox-update

Thank you jbr! Rebooting fix the issue and now my Bookmarks are back. I wonder why Mozilla doesn't tell everyone a reboot might be necessary

Thank you TechHorse for your suggestion. I just tried the solutions is the order received and the first one worked!

If the browser knew it positively, it would have shown you a banner (Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message) — apparently it doesn't know something else is using the files simultaneously, as to it, they just appear as empty, without errors.

It would help to know what security software you're running, as even the troubleshooting data attached to this question are completely blanked out, so there's something intentionally tampering with the browser functionalities:(
