Built-In VPN - what use is it?

Hello,

At the last FF update, I discovered that I had VPN on my top status bar but what does it do?

I have v. 150.0.1 (64 bit). Also Windows 11. I live in France and the only reason to use a VPN is to watch a UK soap which I cannot watch by any other means unless it's live on the TV. I know how to turn it on (obvious), so when I use the BBC website, this is what I do. But it makes not the slightest bit of difference as I am still recognised as being outside the UK.

Am I not doing something please?

Hi,

Right now, the VPN doesn't allow you to specify a server location (though this may change in the future). Its primary purpose is masking your IP to protect your privacy even better.

So, you're not doing anything wrong. To learn more about the VPN, see this article.

Thanks Denys,

I thought this was a good answer so I waited. Surprise, surprise, the VPN worked and I was able to watch a BBC programme from the UK - I'm in France.

Since then, it hasn't worked - I hate things that are inconsistent!

Whether it's ON or OFF, I now cannot watch BBC videos.

Will this ever sort itself out? Will I ever turn it on again? Shall I just delete it if it doesn't work? What does it do anyway?

Hi there! Recently the built-in VPN was updated to allow users the ability to select server locations. If you haven't done so already, give it a shot by updating to the latest version of Firefox!

Regarding streaming, unfortunately websites, including streaming services and government domains, will block access if they detect you’re using a VPN. So a website or streaming service can easily check if the IP address you are using is a VPN and if they don't want you accessing the website with a VPN they can block your access.

You can try changing your server location but there is no guarantee it will work again. We're so sorry for the experience, but thanks for your understanding.

Thanks for the explanation.

I do have the latest version of Firefox.

What I don't understand is the BBC videos which I used to watch until about one week ago, regardless of the VPN.

Why did this happen?

If I use Chrome or one of the others, will it make any difference?

Hi, do you mean that the videos don't play even with the VPN off? If so, that would be an unrelated issue, and we'd appreciate you asking a separate question for it.
