Gmail Pop won't download to Thunderbird 68 on laptop

I am trying to get my new laptop to work like my old one did - where gmail pop downloads to thunderbird on laptop and disappears from gmail web. Right now, emails are in gmail inbox on web and phone for a short bit - then disappear (although are in All Mail). They do NOT download onto thunderbird on laptop unless I happen to check email during that few minutes.

Is the account also set up as POP on the phone or other devices? You may have to enable recent mode to download to TB on the laptop. That means adding recent: before the current User Name in Tools/Account Settings.

IMAP is usually the recommended setup for accounts read on multiple devices.
