Sounds like you lost your folder pane and a toolbar or 2. Do you have a Menu Bar with File-Edit-View etc? If not press the alt key to make it appear. From the Menu Bar select View-Toolbars and turn them back on. Then select View-Layout and turn the Folder Pane back on.
