Since updating last week to Firefox 53.0.3 (32 bit) both my wife and my computers which are both HP laptops with Windows 10 have been experiencing issues with flash and java. When playing videos or games in full screen mode they will randomly crash or minimize the screen. Mozilla itself does not crash but the full screen mode will and then minimize the screen. Also on sites like Facebook, just scrolling or clicking somewhere on the page will produce a random freeze up of the page. We also noticed that Firefox will occasionally flash a small window in the center of our screen against the background of the page we are viewing. It will only flash for a split second and you can't tell what it says or what it is. It looks like a command prompt window but has a white or light blue background but flashes and disappears so quickly you can't tell if there is writing on it or not. This usually happens when we scroll or click the mouse on a page like Facebook. Also, all our drivers are up to date and Windows is up to date. We have have Avast Internet Security paid subscription and have run boot scans and Malware Bytes scan and found no viruses or malicious software. Before last weeks' update this did not happen, so maybe it is some kind of bug in the latest update.

Hi, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

SafeMode-Fx35

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

If Safe Mode didn't help, try disabling hardware acceleration - Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

Also try disabling hardware acceleration in Flash and/or disable Flash protected mode - Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem. Thank you!

I tried running Mozilla Firefox in Safe Mode and still had the issue. I tried disabling hardware acceleration and that just made some videos unplayable but the issue still happens. Mostly it is the pop up window or cmd prompt that flashes very rapidly and then disappears. It's like some kind of process or java script is trying to load but then instantly shutting down. In the process of doing so it will occasionally pause or hang Mozilla and then unhang after it disappears. It's more annoying than anything else. Since it appears to be connected with java or flash as it happens mainly when loading, playing or scrolling through a page with a video or game running on it, I decided to remove my flashplayer, java, and silverlight extensions from the computer and see if that helps, maybe removing some kind of conflicting software. Doing that it has less hangs and pages load quicker, but still get a random pop up window that appears and disappears sometimes, just not as frequently. I did run task manager and watched my processes while checking mail, facebook, and youtube. The couple of times that I was quick enough to see the pop up flash by and looked at task manager, I did not see any new process open or jump up in resource use. The primary ones showing using resource before and after the pop up was Mozilla Firefox, Avast Behavior Shield, Avast Antivirus, System and System Restricted (Network) (12). Mozilla is and has been using a lot of RAM though and it spikes and then goes back down. Usually runs around 500 mb and spikes up to 1,3000 mb and then slowly drops back down between 500 and 750 mb.

I also tried IE to see if I had the same problems happening on it and so far I've not experienced it, so the problem is with Mozilla and I think it has something to do with java or flash since Mozilla stopped using the plugins for them and started using their own software to do what they used to do. I'm thinking that maybe some sights java and flash just don't quite work well with Firefox's proprietary java and flash software and it is causing some log file or cmd file to execute to try to resolve the conflict and maybe that is what I am seeing. If so that should be happening behind the scenes away from the UI and I shouldn't be seeing it. I can only hope that upcoming Firefox updates will fix the issue.
