I can't attach a file to an e-mail

A few days ago, my e-mail was working just fine. I was able to attach files and send the messages. Yesterday, I tried to attach a file to an e-mail and all that happened when I clicked the paperclip was "attach file" was highlighted briefly. No folders/links were displayed for me to select a file to be attached. Any ideas why this is happening?
