Unable to receive or send message because Thunderbird doesn't prompt password anymore and saved password list is empty

After I had run the usual updates on my Mac (security, safari, command line tool), I restarted Thunderbird and was not able to download or send any messages anymore. When I press Get Messages, it says it is connected to pop.gmx.net but it does not ask for any password. When I checked the list of saved passwords under Security, the list was empty. This is the message I get if I try to send a message: <Sending of message failed. An error occurred sending mail: Could not get password for mail.gmx.net. The message was not sent.> BTW, I have no problem sending or receiving from my mail account if I log in on browser.

I was researching on the internet for posts about similar problems but could not find any solution that helps me. I also tried to add a new (existing) account to Thunderbird and even though I checked and tried several times it did not allow me to add the account because apparently the password and/or address is wrong (which is actually not the case).

Is there a possibility that some application/add-on etc. is blocking Thunderbird from prompting the password? Is there any file in the program directory that might be corrupted or deleted that is necessary? Thanks in advance for any hints!

Could you check your anti-virus/firewall settings.

Thunderbird should be set to allow. Some firewalls may need to have a setting like this done. Thunderbird is given the right permissions. Give it "Windows Trusted Application" status.

Example: I use Norton Anti-Virus/Firewall. Sometimes, after an update, Norton still thinks it can allow only the previous version, so you get the kind of error message you are seeing. I then have to close Thunderbird and access Norton. Settings > Network > Smart Firewall > Program Rules Locate Thunderbird and set to 'Allow' On one occassion, I have had to block, ok and then reset to Allow.

If you use another Firewall/Anti-virus program, then there will be similar settings.

Please report back on results.

Thanks so much for your response and that information, Toad-Hall. Unfortunately, your suggestion doesn't work for my problem because my firewall is turned off :( I will keep on trying different things and let you know if I found a solution (not much hope though). BTW, I have Mac OS X Yosemite and one of the last updates was a security update but from what I saw it doesn't really seem to be related to the issue (but maybe someone has more experience with that than me and has an idea if that could have affected Thunderbird...)

I suggest you go to the Thunderbird profile and look at the permissions for files with signons in their name.

My guess is the security update has removed privileges from some files or folders.
