why are some messages in my inbox underlined

The count ( bold ) that indicates unopened mails is the same as the # of underlined mails in the field. These are mails I have replied to.

Underlining usually means that you have a thread, a chain of related mails, which contains unread messages and is collapsed.

Do you not have little crosses or arrows to click on to expand the thread?
