This unwanted "webcake ad" popup takes a lot of space along the bottom of my screen. How to kill it off?

Did you try the other programs (Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro)?

This is malware.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

After doing the entire and was supposedly safety scanner which took about 14 hrs, the webcake showed up twice and suposedly was removed.

However, after startup webcake popped up again, once at the BrightHouse and once at HGTV Blog cabin sweeps web sites. It is an obnoxious, large blob that I do not wish on my screen. Is this just an unwanted ad thing, or is it malicious software? In eithe ase, how to clear it out? Thank you again.

Not sure if you noticed this, but you have an add-on named WebCake. You can disable it on the following tab:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

You also may see a Remove button. If that's grayed, it may have been installed through the Windows control panel or as part of another program.

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs on each start of Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there. You may want to check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so involved preferences can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

Thank you so much, this took care of it.

I just tried to download malwarebytes software & my antivirus software sent me a message stating potentially harmful software was trying to access my site:

http://www.sammsoft.com/downloads/ARO2012_bt.exe » INNO » {app}\ARO.exe a variant of Win32/Systweak potentially unwanted application quarantined Threat was detected upon access to web by the application: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe.

This does not make me feel very comfortable downloading malwarebytes software

Yes, your reply was very helpful in that you told me that it was indeed malware. Scanware did not remove it, it just told me that it was there. But FF took care of the removal. Thank you-all very much !
