I don't want to clear my history every time I close out my browser. Every time I uncheck the option "clear history when firefox closes" it somehow magically checks itself. It does this EVERY time I close out the browser.

This started while still using an older version of firefox & continues now that I have ugraded to the latest version (11). I use Windows XP svc pack 3.

Have you looked at the article How to fix preferences that won't save? Does that help you any?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Thank you Tyler. I just now got back to the computer & am going thru the link you provided.

cor-el, I appreciate your response and will follow the instructions you offered.

One thing I did to try and by-pass the problem for now was to uncheck everything in the settings box directly across from "clear history when firefox closes." Do you think that could be as a temporary solution?

Thanks again!!! I will let you know how it goes.

So, in Firefox Options, you cleared the settings like "Remember history"? Yes, if those aren't checked Firefox will remove your history

I just checked my options & firefox has rechecked "clear history when firefox closes." So I went into my history and it looks like there's a lot there. Where can I go to see my cache &/or cookies, including dates?

It appears that when I close my browser most sites where I am signed in stay signed in when I reopen the browser. (I close browser leaving the tabs up.) Wouldn't I have to sign in again if my cookies, cache & history had been cleared?

I'm obviously (LOL) not a tech, but when I used to manually clear older versions of IE's cookies & cache, I would always have to sign back in to the websites I use.

Thanks!!!

I just went into the troubleshooting link and all the 'clear on shutdown' options are all false. That should mean that nothing is being cleared, right?

I don't have any of the third party items mentioned in that section.

FYI, I have had FF set up to not accept third party cookies for a long time & it’s still honoring that.

I also noticed that every time I open FF 11, it goes thru a search for compatible add ons. Is that normal?

No, if you leave tabs open then Firefox saves the cookies as part of that session data in the sessionstore.js

Set the browser.sessionstore.privacy_level pref to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS, default in Firefox 3 versions) on the about:config page to disable saving cookies via session restore.
You can change the browser.sessionstore.privacy_level_deferred pref that is used when you do not reopen the previous session automatically via "Show my windows and tabs from last time".

As of this morning I'm having the same issues w/FF 11 that I had w/the older version. So upgrading not only didn't work, it caused me to lose some of my favorite add-ons because they aren't compatible with FF AND it didn't solve any of the problems I was having that I thought upgrading would fix.  :-(

The problems I was having & still have are:

  • its S-L-O-W as molasses loading
  • I keep getting scripts messing up from Lazarus and now a new one: resource:///components/nsBlocklistService js:756. Never had this one until today.
  • it freezes up when I click on anything on any open tab &/or when moving from tab to tab.

And now, when FF11 loads it first has to search to be sure my add-ons are compatible which slows loading down even further. I don't have all that many add-ons

The old FF never used to do this and it was fast...was faster than IE & now they seem to be in a race to see which is the slowest.

Cor-El, I really appreciate your help! I read all the links and am totally lost. I think its way over my head.

I looked at my history and it seems to be in tact for at least this past month. So I guess it doesn't matter if clear cookies when FF closes is checked or not cuz I unchecked everything in the settings.

What I wrote above is about session restore saving the cookies of tabs that are open when Firefox is closed.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

You may have security software that reverses changes and prevents you from unchecking the clear recent history settings.

I'm using MS security essentials. I also use wise registry & disk cleaner at least once a month. (just did it today) Plus I use Mike Lin's start up monitor to make sure no unwanted stuff tries to attach itself to my startup.

I changes to MSSE from avast, PC tools (which were really annoying w/all the popups), mcafee (yuck) & norton (yuck), as well as spybot & a couple of others.

If you have any suggestions I'm all ears.  :-)

So now I'm getting "unresponsive scripts" from support.mozilla.org. I have a feeling it's mozilla & lazarus all their numerous pain in the butt scripts that are causing all the problems because the slowness and other issues tend to disappear after the scripts are stopped (which takes FOREVER) and it has some recovery time.

I really like mozilla, but they need to follow the old adage, WHEN IT AIN"T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!!!! I didn't have the problems with the older versions. In the 'old days' FF worked great, was fast (WAY faster than IE) & had great add-ons that worked! Now lazarus has way too many unresponsive scripts which hangs ff up from loading properly.

I really wish someone from mozilla would address this!
