I also found myself viewing in full-screen mode without knowing how that happened or how to get out - how to regain access to the menu and toolbars.

With many video playing programs the ESC key exits full-screen mode but that doesn't work with Firefox.

Firefox would restart in full-screen. Fortunately, I had Firefox configured to load the homepage at start and I had Google set as my homepage.

I was able to Google "can't exit full screen in Firefox" and found the Mozilla help page that said to use F11 to toggle full screen.

I did not discover that the menu bar will appear when you move the cursor to the top of the screen until afterward.

I have been using Firefox as my go to browser for almost a decade now but this is the first time I ran into this problem.

Why doesn't the ESC key exit full-screen? It does not seem to be used to do anything else, why not?

If you run Firefox in full screen mode then press F11 or fn + F11 to toggle (Mac: command+Shift+F).

You can also hover the mouse to the top to make the toolbars appear and choose Exit Full Screen Mode via the right-click context menu of the Tab bar or the Navigation Toolbar.

The ESC key can only be used to exit full screen if you entered full screen mode in a video (Flash) player so that player plays the media file full screen and not if you enter full screen mode via F11 or the Firefox/View menu.
