Resets to default when I close my browser, losing all saved data

This problem started when I started using the last version of FF (before 4.0): it doesnt matter if I reboot my pc, clear all cookies, history, & cache, or anything else I have tried - when I close my FF browser, none of the things I did are saved.

What I mean is, I can install add-ons, delete the "most visited" folder on my toolbar, change my home page - but when I close my browser, all of that goes back to the default & when I open a new browser, 2 tabs open - 1 is the initial MFF page welcoming me to FF & the other is the FF home page - the add-ons are gone - and the "most visited" folder is back.

I upgraded this morning to FF 4.0 hoping that would fix all of these bugs, but all of those same problems still exist - plus, I keep hearing about a FF tab at the top of my browser, but that isnt there.

I am wondering now if my "sync" didnt take either and I will have to scrap my plan of syncing my desktop FF with my laptop FF -- incidentally, the FF I downloaded onto my laptop works just fine - I dont have the above problems on my laptop, just my desktop.
