When I search for a term by writing in the search box on the Google home page, the inserted text goes into the address bar

more options

I've tried deselecting all of the Firefox search options, but since the last Windows update (version 1904), whenever I try searching for something in the search box on the Google home page, I suddenly find myself writing in the address bar, and this is very annoying as the https://www.google.com address remains there and the search returns all sorts of things. Is there a way to stop this from happening? I've also noticed that the various one-click search engines that I put in the search box (to the right of the address bar) are now also displayed in the pane that opens when the address bar is used for searching, and this had never happened before.

That's strange; I have not seen that.

Usually if you move the focus/cursor from the page to the address bar -- for example by pressing F6 or Ctrl+L -- the entire contents of the address bar get selected and replaced by any new text you type, so it's difficult to understand what is happening.

Three questions:

(1) Are you enrolled in any studies that could be modifying Firefox preferences?

Type about:studies in the address bar and press Enter to check on that. More info: About Studies.

(2) Any difference in a private window?

(3) Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode?

In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

The row of one-click search engines has appeared at the bottom of the address bar drop-down for a long time. Before Firefox 78, there was an about:config preference to hide them. That preference no longer works.
