Intermittently two tabs try to take focus at the same time

I am running Quantum 61.1 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu in Linux Mint 19. Intermittently, and I have yet to determine a common thread, two tabs seem to be competing to for focus. It happens on different web sites, so I cannot even determine if the problem is site related or not. A screenshot will not show anything either because all that happens is I open several tabs and suddenly on tries to take focus and then will switch back to the last focused tab and continue to switch back and forth as though I am clicking on the tab bar to select each tab. If I close one of the "offending" tabs, the problem switches to another until all "offenders" are closed. I am unsure if the problem is Linux related, an Add on, or Firefox because I did not have the issue in Windoze which I abandoned at about the time that Quantum was released. I cannot, yet, reliably cause the issue. (I currently have 8 tabs open and it's working fine)

Can anyone suggest how, or where, to start?

Thanks for that, I was using FF this morning and it started again, and noticed that it might be an add on, "colorful tabs", causing the issue because, this time there were only two tabs open and the tab colour started flashing on and off. I disabled that extension and problem seems to have gone away. If the issue were consistent, then I could work with safe mode and re-activate extensions until it occurred again, but, give the intemittency of the problem I could not safely determine how, or what caused it. I was just "lucky: this morning. I can live without coloured tabs for now, some of the other extensions not so.

Hi, please try : Try Firefox Safe Mode to TEST & see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
