Thunderbird takes minutes or longer to download each message, with "not responding" in windows title bar
A day or so ago, thunderbird asked me if I want to compact my folders. I said, 'Sure!'
Since then it has been so slow that it is unusable. Each message takes multiple minutes to download (and the messages are small.)
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird...
I am losing my mind.

I really don't know why people think reinstalling Thunderbird would magically fix things. You've just wasted your time. Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. The program files are static and do not change (except when you upgrade the Thunderbird application version). Because we store profile and program files separately, you can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with a Thunderbird update your information will still be available. It also means that you don't have to reinstall Thunderbird in order to delete your information or troubleshoot a problem.
Do you get a 'Not responding' message at the top of the Thunderbird window, or any other error messages?
I do get a 'not responding' message at the top of the screen whilst it is downloading new messages.
Thanks!
Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode
Does the problem go away?
It works great in Safe Mode with Networking... How can I make this permanent? -J

Working in safe mode, means the problem is caused by something started during Windows startup. Good starting point is #3 and #6 at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems
No help. I'm running Windows 7, and this help refers specifically to W10. Firefox is taking a minute or more to respond to commands- including trying to close the program. Restarting the computer "fixes" the problem, momentarily, but then it bogs down again. I've tried restarting without add-ons. Problem persists. Thanks for your help. -J.
oaklander,
please start a new topic for your problem. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/new
This assumes your problem is about Thunderbird.
