Why is there no scrollbar?

Just installed firefox on Arch Linux. Very surprised to discover that this new fancy version of firefox has no scrollbars whatsoever, no settings to turn them on or off, or even any mention of the change.

Is this the result of a bug, or a bad design decision? see attached screenshot. No scrollbar anywhere to be seen, i had to install an extension just to post this messege. How do I fix this?

Amazingly your web browser wouldn't even upload the screenshot. I had to use vivaldi for the second attempt.

Are you using a GTK3 theme in Linux since that is the most common source for issues with scroll bars not displaying properly?

starting with "env GTK_THEME=Adwaita:light" gives me scrollbars. Very ugly scrollbars that don't match firefox's own theme, but scrollbars nonetheless.

I'll try Firefox out again in six months or so, hopefully this has been sorted out by then. It's very hard to find a linux computer that doesn't use GTK for something.

Firefox is a Gnome app and official builds since Firefox 46.0 has required GTK 3.4 (three.four) at minimum to run as it used to be GTK 2.18 or higher. This means you need a GTK3 theme to well theme Firefox or it will look unthemed and possibly have some other issues like having a thin or no scollbar and missing scrollbar arrows.

Some Linux distros may have delayed this change in their own provided package builds until as late as Firefox 57.0 and later Releases.
