Firefox alwas asks to close to be able to open an external link
For a few weeks now, every time I try to open a link either from my email or from a web page that is already opened in firefox, firefox asks me to close the already running firefox instance and then it reopens with my previous tabs and the new one that came from the link.

Please uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.4 with a Full Version Installer

That's unusual. Is there anything special about how you start Firefox, for example, displaying the Profile Manager to choose a profile?
Are you opening Firefox with the -no-remote command line switch?
Check the target field in the Firefox desktop shortcut and make sure you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).
If you have a MOZ_NO_REMOTE environment variable then remove this variable and do not change its value to 0 because that doesn't work (Firefox checks for its existence and not the value).
