My browser kept crashing, so I got a pop up saying to refresh/reinstall firefox. As that was happening my laptop went off (hadn't realised my charger wasn't properly in - duh moment) now I have the 'old firefox data' folder on my desktop, I still have the firefox icon but if I click on it, I keep getting the Your firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible.

Every help page tells me to go to the menu in the firefox browser....not what to do if you can't even get in that far. There was some talk about firefox needing to find my profile (the old data?) but again that page also directed me to access the menu once in firefox...

what do I do if I can't even get that far...(and I am not willing to restore my computer to an earlier date)

Please help.

When a computer looses power without a proper shutdown, files can be contaminated.

You should run a utility to check the files on the disk first.

the dates tie up with when the laptop went off (about 90 minutes ago)

the one thing I could do from the help pages I referred to was go to profile manager,

(following this advice: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles)

so I went in there and selected default and soon as I selected default, the browser camer up and bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords (for non financial websites) all seem to be associated with the browser page

I think so....I had uninstalled firefox, then tried to download it again 4-5 times and was still getting the error message then did the profile manager thing...so I am not sure how was fixed but it looks like it is I guess.

It's possible a corrupt file was replaced.
