Why does firefox split web pages and lines when printing--and how can I stop it?

more options

In Internet Explorer, there was no problem printing web pages, either to a printer or to PDF. In Firefox, however, pages--and lines--get split into separate pages, sometimes with only one word or line per page. I tried to go into page setup in Firefox, but there is no obvious way to fix it. I would appreciate some help.

This only happens on some pages, while others use the full sheet of paper?

There are some glitches with printing in Firefox caused by the use of certain style rules in web pages. The developers have made sure they look correct on screen, but when it comes to paginating, the code doesn't always work. As longstanding Firefox users as well as forum volunteers, we all hate that when it happens.

Sometimes there are easy workarounds, but since it depends on what style rules the site is using, I don't have a one-size-fits-all solution for you. If there is a particular site where this is a problem for you, and we wouldn't need a login to view the page, do you want to post the URL?

One thing that often works is to select the part of the page you want to print (or the entire page using Ctrl+a) and in the Print dialog (Ctrl+p) choose Selection in the Print Range. Unfortunately, this can lead to page breaks through the middle of images, but depending on your needs, it might be sufficient.

If you don't already have a PDF printer driver, I suggest installing a free one for testing so we don't waste too much paper.

Here are two free PDF printer drivers I have used:

If you are just printing for quick reference and don't mind a "trial edition" banner on your PDF, I really like this one due to its handy preview-before-save feature:

I print to both a connected printer and to PDF (using Adobe Professional). So when I use Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, everything works beautifully; when I use Firefox, I get the page segmentation problems--even though I try printing the exact same page or pages from the same website. So I'm afraid it's not a problem of the particular website settings. It's a problem with Firefox.

I use it to "format" webpages to print a webpage with the information I want on paper. Like getting rid of advertisements and website navigation panels where the website doesn't use a print.css file to print only the relevant stuff a user would want to print. It also helps with poorly formatted pages like you are describing - sometimes. But it does take some time to use and there is a learning curve involved - but there are Undo and Undo All buttons when you remove the wrong things.

It also has a PDF feature built it, but I haven't used it. I "print" to MHT (using UnMHT) when I want to save a webpage quickly to a disk drive, and if I want it "on paper" I open the MHT file in Firefox and then use Print Edit to clean it up for printing to paper. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unmht/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mozilla-archive-format/

Hi jmlp2015, Firefox will always have problems printing some websites. I'm not saying the website did anything wrong, I'm saying that until Firefox is fixed to work with that website's unique blend of layout rules -- which could take months or years -- we might be able to help you work around the problem.

You don't have to mention the site if you don't want to, but the more websites we can identify that Firefox does not handle correctly, the more input we can give to the developers on what needs to be fixed.

As I noted above, I assume you do not have this problem on ALL websites. If you did, we would suggest resetting and/or modifying some of Firefox's hidden printer settings. Completely different set of issues.

The printing problem does indeed arise with ALL websites. What are the suggestions for "resetting and/or modifying some of Firefox's hidden printer settings" that you mentioned?

You can clear the information that Firefox has gathered from Windows about your printers using the following method:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste printer and pause while the list is filtered

(3) For each setting for the problem printer, right-click and Reset it. The fastest way is to right-click with the mouse and then press the r key on the keyboard with your other hand. (You can skip the footer/header center/left/right settings if you have customized them.)

The next time you call up the Print dialog and select that printer, Firefox should re-read the printer parameters.
